Men's NCAA Qualifiers Â
Women's NCAA QualifiersWESTERVILLE, Ohio—Otterbein University has qualified in three events for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships scheduled to get underway Thursday at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.
Â
The Cardinals will be sending the men's 4 x 100-meter relay team of John Pyles, Brandon Bruner, Seth Lloyd, and Turner Jones; Shyla Cummings in the 200-meter dash; and Taylor Lindsey in the women's pole vault. Cummings and Lindsey are repeat qualifiers, each making the indoor national championships this year. Bruner qualified in the long jump for the 2014 indoor NCAA championships.
Â
The men's 4x1 relay team enters the championships with the eighth-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season, a school record 41.13 set at North Central College May 8.
Â
"The men's 4x1 is mostly a rookie group when it comes to competing at the national level," said Otterbein head coach Dara Ford. "It's always a great experience to take guys to their first national meet. This group really came together well in the last month of the season. I think they surprised everyone, including themselves. These four guys have only raced together once, so it will be exciting to see what they can do at nationals."
Â
Lindsey vaulted a school record 12- 5 1/2 at Ohio Wesleyan University May 11, and enters the NCAA's with the seventh-best vault in the nation. She finished 11th at the indoor nationals this year.
Â
"Taylor is coming off of the best vaulting day of her life (at Ohio Wesleyan)," Ford said. "She is much more confident going into this national meet because she has a much better idea of what to expect."
Â
Cummings qualified for the outdoor championships with a school record 24.67 in the 200 at Kenyon College April 18. She ranks 13th heading into the outdoor championships. Cummings finished ninth at the indoor national championships this year.
Â
"As a freshman, Shyla is in rare company," Ford said. "She doesn't get to run against a lot of competition during the season so it will be exciting to see how she competes against the best in the nation. She gained valuable experience indoor, and looks to carry that into the prelims on Thursday."
