LIMA, Ohio – The Cardinal women’s tennis team picked up a 5-4 win over the University of Northwestern Ohio while the men dropped an 8-1 decision to the Racers Sunday afternoon.

It was the first match of the season for both squads, with the women picking up the win over the NAIA’s 26th ranked team.

The Cardinal women were led by two-time defending Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year junior Julie Stroyne. Stroyne picked up a three-set win over Andrea Arango (6-3, 5-7, 7-5) and paired with senior Taylor Jordan for a 8-3 victory in first doubles.

“The momentum did a lot if shifting in the match,” said women’s head coach Pat Anderson. “There was no easing back into this season for Julie but she battled hard against a very tough opponent.”

The Cardinal women swept doubles competition with freshmen Sammi Kruger and Adrien Leatherwood winning at second doubles 8-4, while the team of sophomore Emma Krummel and freshman Megan Locke picked up a 9-7 win in the third spot. Kruger also picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory at third singles to give Otterbein the victory.

The Cardinal men were not as successful in their matchup with the Racers.

Freshman David Seckel picked up the lone victory for Otterbein at third singles. Seckel knocked off Cassio Sirimarco 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) to prevent Northwestern Ohio from shutting out the Cardinals.

The Otterbein women’s tennis team will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 12 when they head to Canton to take on Malone College. Meanwhile, the Cardinal men will head up to Malone on Saturday Sept. 22 in their next match.

"(The women) have a lot of work to do but I am confident that this team will work hard and be ready for whatever comes their way this season." said Anderson. "In the course of just a week they have formed a bond and established team goals. This is going to be a good season!"
