Lauren’s First and Goal was created in 2004 by John and Marianne in honor of now 15-year-old Lauren, a pediatric brain tumor survivor. The ninth annual camp was held at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. this past summer, attracting over 2,200 participants.
Nearly 500 student-athletes participated in the third annual Otterbein camp held back on Sunday, June 17 in Westerville. The event, welcoming high school players from 12 states and over 120 different schools, raised more than $16,000 for pediatric brain tumor research. In total, the camps raised over $132,000 this past year.
The one-day event is the primary fundraiser for Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation, with all proceeds going directly to its mission of providing financial support for brain tumor research and cancer services, offering financial and emotional support to families living with pediatric cancer, and increasing awareness of the disease. Locally, donations help support pediatric oncology patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
During the camp, players receive instruction in a variety of offensive and defensive skills from college coaches from around the country. More than 130 college coaches representing colleges and universities from Ohio and neighboring states volunteered this past year at Otterbein. Current Ohio State University head football coach Urban Meyer, former OSU head coach Jim Tressel, and former Buckeye running back Archie Griffin have served as the last three keynote speakers.
